Comparison - The Incredible Shrinking Man
RC2 Universal (2006) &
Filmclip from "Jack Arnold Erzählt"
(1983)
Kommentar: The Incredible Shrinking Man is the only DVD of Jack Arnold's movies which Universal has transferred in 1.78:1 instead of 1.33:1. This comparison shows why: a clip from and old interview series, made in 1983 by the German tv-station WDR, uses filmclips with an unmatted picture, which show that the movie was hard-matted to an aspect ratio of ca. 1.60:1. While Universal has transferred Arnold's other movies (Tarantula, It Came from Outer Space and the Creature of the Black Lagoon films) in 1.33:1 open-matte, the studio had no choice with The Incredible Shrinking Man because of the hard-matting. There is evidence that the movie was framed for aspect ratios up to 2:1, but the chosen 1.78:1 looks very good on the DVD and even in comparison with the unmatted version doesn't lose any vital information.

Please note: the captures of the filmclips were taken from an old VHS recording of the program and are only meant as a comparison between the framing and not the quality. See also the comparison between the DVD and an old 1.33:1 tv-broadcast here, which was actually pan&scanned.
